Brewtroller Menu Problem

Image
I've been using a brewtroller 4.0 Pro board for a year or so now and its been fantastic. I've had it mounted within a water proof Stainless steel box that I got off a mate which was great. About two months a go I noticed that my menus wouldn't preceed and it'll go back and fourth even if I turn the encoder wheel around one direction, As you could imagine this annoyed me greatly and worse it happend during a brew. Youtube video of my brewtroller playing up (skip to 40sec) After playing around with my limited knowedge of electronics I jumped on freenode IRC server and talked directly to the brewtroller guys in #brewtroller. I should have done this amonth ago because an hour or two later my brewtroller board was fixed and the software compiling errors had be identified and updated. So what did they get me to do? Well first I had to check the encoder plug and see if 5v was coming out the pins. I couldn't do this because my multimeter was out of batteries so I just r

Why does my lager taste like butterscotch

My test batch lager tasted of butterscotch once kegged... brew day below.. Well I did a test batch on my newly configured rig to get my eye in, I decided to use some random stuff I had laying around, which made me decide on a Vienna Lager. This sounded like a nice light beer to try and since its a lager I didn't put to much hops in my 'test' batch. The recipe if anyone is interested was..  Ingredients: ------------ Amount        Item                                      Type         % or IBU      4.70 kg       Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM)                     Grain        88.68 %       0.40 kg       Munich I (Weyermann) (7.1 SRM)            Grain        7.55 %        0.20 kg       Carapils (Weyermann) (2.0 SRM)            Grain        3.77 %        50.00 gm      Hallertauer [6.30 %]  (60 min)            Hops         34.1 IBU      10.00 gm      Hallertauer [6.30 %]  (5 min)             Hops         1.4 IBU       1 Pkgs        SafLager West European Lager (DCL Yeast #SYe

Rammstyle Brewery is alive!

Image
Rammstyle Brewery comes together in the new house. I managed to slip a wet room into the design which is fully plumbed from town water and also connected to a 23,500lt rain water tank for my chiller. Our house also has three phase power with 40amps per phase, I got a completely seperate circuit into the brew room so if i blow something the rest of the house keeps on going. The room is big enough for two fermenting fridges, a laundry trough in one corner and a three vessel brewrig with a Brewtroller control panel, a table for working with grain in tubs under it and room to move for brewing. The brewery is connected to a games room with pool table and kegerator (from previous blog), I like to think of it as the Man Wing of the house. The following are some pictures of it coming together. I'll have more of a close up of my brewRig configuration in the next blog where I'll chat about my Brewtroller setup and my Arudino Project for Fermenting and controlling kegerator.

When Brewing Sessions Go Wild!

Image
Howdy all, Thought I'd take a few days off work and do a brew on my newly upgraded brewrig. This sounded like a good idea but when put into practice I went a little something like this.. Brew Day, James Squire Golden Ale Clone. Get up at 3am (when son wakes us up) settle him and turn the HLT. Testing out the new 2400watt element newly installed into the kettle. This works fine no drama or anthing. Get up and start to MASH in around 7am, tip the grain in the MLT, the crush looks a little different so i double check that it is crushed.. Yup it is but maybe my mill was on the wrong settle.. too late now!... to the HERMS pot on and get upto the 65.5c required for this recipe.. underlet 22lt into the MLT from the HLT, everything is going great guns at the moment... Its been awhile since i've brewed but after the water hits the grain you get a hit of that smell.. OHHHH i remember this smell! loving it at the moment.. Connect up the hoses to the pump/herms/mlt and kick it off.

How to Build a Kegerator

The Brief! Update my Kegerator 1.0 *upright fridge which died!* Hide the Co2 Bottle Hide the Chest Freezer Must be mobile Have a chiller for glass's/bottle beer The wife must allow it in the house so it must match the house have built before my 30th Must have top mount font Tools Used Me Drill Table Saw Circular Saw Jigsaw Wood Glue Sheets of 18mm MDF (I think) Sheets of 3m MDF (I think) Hole Saw Clamps Pre-Design the kegerator Did a bucketload of googling to find what other people are doing to see any cool designs. I found some cool designs but in the end decided to do my own. Designing the kegerator I thought I'd better design it before I go out and start whacking some wood and stuff together. From the brief i had a think about what I could do, got all the dimensions of the gear and modeled them up so not to miss anything. (I had more pictures but my computer died and it didn't save them all)     The

Testing out this blogger caper

Hello World! Just thought I'd test out this blogging stuff and see how it works. Hopfully fill this up with some of my brewing adventures. Building new rigs and other equipment for brewing. Might even toss in some other random things. cheers
